It is believed in many traditions that each of us is alive at a precise moment in time—and in a specific place—because our souls chose it.
These are the thoughts that get me fired up. So why now? We all know that all humans, no matter what period they live in, face challenges. Challenges are how we evolve, overcome limitations, and learn during our lifetime. This is what I like to call “our contribution to the knowledge of the whole”—which is an important mission we all share, whether we realize it or not. As a person who loves to gift, I get more energized about this offering to the greater intelligence than I would if this was all simply about me.
But why did we choose this time in history? What were we thinking? Everything about being alive at this time seems chaotic, unpredictable, and uncertain. Priorities have shifted and, to a large degree, there’s underlying fear which causes many to retract, protect, and wait/watch.
If we believe that we, on some level chose to be alive at this precise chaotic and defining time, there must be a truly compelling reason. And I’m willing to say that sitting still waiting until things pass is not it.
On the other hand, if we also believe that our soul chooses when to leave this plane yet we’re still here—surviving pandemics, vaccines, disease, crime, toxins in our environment, poor quality food, mindless scrolling, censorship, wars, lies, and robots—our center-stage cue must be happening right about now, and we don’t want to miss it.
I personally feel this is the time to be more human than ever. By that I mean utilizing every single one of the underutilized powers within us, along with some great habits we used to practice but perhaps have forgotten (like hugging each other).
Something that makes us uniquely human is our ability to create beauty—masterpieces that touch the soul and contribute to waking us up from autopilot. Right now, we’re mostly riding on beauty that comes from nature itself—plants, animals, the beach, mountains, snow, lakes, the desert, looking into someone’s eyes, holding someone’s hand, the crisp air at dawn, the colors of the sky at sunset, ... Alternatively, we’re riding on human creations from the past: a timeless song, an architectural masterpiece, a beautifully designed environment or object, soul-touching art, wardrobes from an era when dressing well showed reverence for living.
Although there are plenty of people that are creating beauty both in their lives and with their lives, the majority of what we’re putting out as a collective of humans, the majority of what surrounds us at this point in time, is turning to ruins. In attempting maximum efficiency, in focusing on the virtual world, and in racing for the next technology shortcut, we’ve been neglecting the quality of our creations in this three-dimensional world we live in. Look around. We’re slacking, while nature is doing double duty.
Let’s dress up. Let’s put attention and care when setting the table. Let’s create musical masterpieces, not just trendy songs. Let’s design spaces that bring tears to our eyes. Let’s move our bodies in celebration. Let’s go beyond good enough and follow meaningful rituals. Let’s touch each other’s souls (and bodies!). Let’s make changes that add beauty to our environment.
The world we’ve created as humans has lately been neglected, and for those that are still undecided about their role in this collective creation, it’s time to take a stance.
What we’re here to accomplish in our lifetime is not something outside of us. It’s what’s inside that needs to be authentically expressed for beauty to emerge. It’s care, respect, and reverence for life. It’s taking a thought or an action all the way to the end without distractions, it’s standing straight and dressing well, nurturing our bodies for ourselves and for others. It’s keeping our word, making an offering from the heart, a great meal that is not rushed where everyone is present. It’s finding humor and experiencing belly laughs. It’s being conscious of what we put out: whatever otherworldly innovative creation that may be. We need them all!
If the world outside of us reflects what’s going on inside, let’s ask ourselves why we chose to be alive at this moment in time. Our cue is now.
We've started the great work of mastering ourselves. Now is the time to come together and deliberately create.
